Last week, BIM Analytics 2010: The Fourth Annual USC Symposium on Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Analytics brought members of the architecture, engineering, and construction industries together at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles for a day of presentations and discussion on topics related to performance based design.
Jeffrey Ouellette, project architect and BIM expert at Nemetschek North America, spoke to attendees about the importance of openBIM, the use of internationally recognized open standards to exchange building information. These standards include the use of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) for building geometry and data and PDF for drawings and presentations.
“BIM Analytics 2010: Performance Based Design (USC, School of Architecture) showcased 11 speakers from architecture, engineering, construction, and even owners on how BIM, as a promising technology, can encourage improved integration of design analysis into the building model,” said Professor Karen Kensek of USC’s School of Architecture. “Jeffrey Ouellette’s presentation ‘openBIM: Interoperability and the State of the Art of BIM’ brought the discussion to a logical conclusion: how will we be able to share this information as he advocated for open standards and compatibility.”
